What the Velino is
Massa d’Albe sits at 880 m on the southern flank, inside the Sirente-Velino park. What separates a village near the mountain from a village on it becomes clear the moment you step outside.
The Monte Velino Nature Reserve is managed by the Forestry Carabinieri. It protects old beech woods, high grassland and wildlife that survives in few other Italian places. The visitor centre and wildlife area are at Magliano de’ Marsi, ten minutes by car.
Before setting out
Above two thousand metres the weather turns fast and the phone does not always have signal. Check the forecast, tell someone your route, carry more water than you think.
The four seasons
June to September
The summit is within reach of anyone who walks regularly. Down in the village at 880 m the nights stay cool: the house has no air conditioning and does not need it.
October and November
The beech woods turn red and the mountain empties. This is when chamois are most likely to come lower down, with binoculars and some patience.
December to March
The Velino turns white and you see it whole from the yard. Snowshoes on the Piani di Pezza, skiing at Ovindoli. The summit demands crampons, an ice axe and experience.

What hikers ask
Can I summit in a day?
Yes, if you are fit. The classic route starts at the Piani di Pezza and passes Rifugio Vincenzo Sebastiani: around a thousand metres of ascent, six to eight hours round trip. Boots, water and a checked forecast are essential.
Anything easy for children?
The paths around the village and the Alba Fucens loop are short and flat. The Piani di Pezza is almost level. The reserve visitor centre at Magliano de’ Marsi has a wildlife area built for small children.
Do you really see chamois?
The Apennine chamois was reintroduced here and the population holds. Sighting one is realistic at dawn or dusk in autumn, with binoculars. Golden eagles and wolves live in the reserve too; the Marsican brown bear passes through, but rarely.
